Why Does Your Furnace Smell When You Turn It On?

November 01, 2016

The weather is getting colder in Plover and we will have to turn our furnaces on soon. This season we get a great deal of furnace repair calls from homeowners expressing that they smell something when they turn their furnace on for the first time. Most likely you haven’t been running your furnace since it was last cold. In that time dust may have collected inside your system. The first time you activate your furnace, that dust will incinerate. The smell from this will travel through your ducts throughout your house. This doesn’t usually present any sort of concern and the smell will typically go away after a short amount of time. However, if the smell does not go away after a bit, please notify one of our pros.

Another reason you could be smelling an stench from your furnace is that your air filter may have become blocked. This can cause your blower motor to get overused and could cause the motor, and/or the furnace to overheat.

Your furnace is going to be an important part of your life this winter season. If you haven’t yet scheduled your routine furnace repair, now is the perfect time. Our pros will make sure your system is running safely and clean the internal components before you have to fret about a burning odor. Give us a call at 715-504-0533 to schedule an appointment with us.
